The Reverse-Aging of Burkeline & Hypaflex

Unlike other polymers that degrade, Burkeline™ Roofing and Hypaflex undergoes progressive crosslinking, which enhances its mechanical properties and resistance to oxidative damage. This process effectively reverses aging, resulting in increased tensile strength, dimensional stability, and overall durability. Burke Industries rubber products’s ability to form a 3D network structure over time makes it exceptionally resilient, with installations lasting 30 or more years without significant degradation. This self-improving characteristic sets Burke Industries rubber products apart, making it a superior choice for long-term applications in potable water environments. Click here to learn more.

Lake Forest Reservoir

Lake Forest Reservoir, Washington USA

Constructed back in 1962, this 60-million-gallon reservoir has provided the citizens of Washington with a source of both potable and emergency water.  In 2021, engineers noticed that the previous installed reinforced polypropylene liner was prematurely failing.   With its superior UV resistance and natural defenses to chlorine , the liner was replaced in September 2022 using 850,000 square feet of Hypaflex and will provide clean, potable water for 30-years or longer.  Click here to learn more!

Upper Reservoir, California, USA

The district’s Upper Reservoir, equipped with a 1.14 mm (45-mil) Hypaflex liner and floating cover installed in 1988, has served a growing population for 30 years without major issues. The Hypaflex material, chosen for its durability and cost-effectiveness, was still in good condition upon inspection in 2018. Regular maintenance and quality installation contributed to its longevity. The reservoir’s cover system, updated in 2018, remains one of the longest-performing Hypaflex projects in Southern California.

Hinkle Reservoir, California

Hinkle Reservoir, California, USA

Originally installed in 1980, this is one of the most successful Hypaflex® installations to date.  This 610,000-square-foot installation stood the test of time, showing outstanding performance in an environment where temperatures can swing from 35⁰F to 104 ⁰ F.  While we’re proud to offer a 30-year warranty against failure, the Hinkle Reservoir is a true testament to the resilience of our V liners and covers, which was proactively replaced after 42 years in service.
